3 Months into my Gap year, which saw me stooging in the UK, my Dad called me saying "Bud they shutting all flights down, you leaving today!" So Covid had me back in SA, locked down, and you know that song "Bored in the house and I'm in the house bored"? Well, that was me! Then I was set a challenge: make a cocktail every day and post it on Instagram. The best part was I got to drink it afterwards. Not much of a "challenge" right? But it was the inspiration I needed and the seed was planted. My first training course led to my first job as a service barman. Covid had us in masks in back rooms behind the scenes. If ever there was an inspiration killer - never hide your bar staff in the back room. The following year it was back to Varsity to study to be a teacher or... was it?
Well, studying never really worked out because I need inspiration, and studying online, alone, is just not for me. Fortunately, I met some amazing Mentors in the Bar industry. They took me under their wings and guided me, helping me to see that there is so much more to this game than I had imagined. I entered the Protégé Bartender Programme and landed Second place! That inspired me to try harder as I realised I could be Number 1 if I put my mind (and skills) to it. I managed to land a job at one of the world's top 100 Bars, and let me tell you, the lessons came fast and hard. I was voted "Employee of the Month" and won my first in-house competition. I felt like I truly belonged in this industry, so I entered World Class 2022 at age 20. I finished in the Top 6.
So, how is it going? Lets discuss it over a single malt whisky or an Old fashioned. I know full well I am only here because of my incredible support base. Now I ask for your support at my sophisticated Cocktail bar. It'll be worth it, I assure you.
